Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles have been around for a while but continues to be a very popular flooring optionHere is what you should know about what are ceramic tiles

Ceramic floor tiles are made by firing slabs / tiles made from mixture of clay, sand and other minerals in a kiln at high temperatures. Ceramic floor tiles have been one of the most popular flooring options until recently because of its economy, hygiene, easy of installing & designs but have given way to its stronger and advanced cousins Porcelain & Vitrified Tiles. Infact Porcelain and Vitrified tiles are also type of ceramic tiles with the basic difference being in the porosity or moisture absorption that in turn effects the strength. Higher the moisture absorption , lower is the strength.

Ceramic Tiles : Moisture absorption > 3%
Porcelain Tiles  : Moisture Absorption 0.08 % - 3%                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Vitrified Tiles  : Moisture Absorption < 0.08%

Hence ceramic tiles are mostly used in walls these days. However Ceramic floor tiles can be used in indoor areas like Living rooms / bedrooms etc but are not advisable to be used in outside areas like porch or parking. Ceramic tiles can be a good budget alternative to Vitrified tiles. Similar designs of vitrified ties can be obtained at a fairly lesser price with Ceramic Floor tiles provided that the use is in a light traffic area. A lot of brands are still promoting & marketing the new age digital ceramic floor tiles for indoor areas where heavy traffic is not expected.
